IOAA History

start-header

The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is one of the youngest and most vibrant members of the global family of International Science Olympiads. Established in 2006 by five founding nations—Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, China, and Poland—the IOAA was created with a shared vision: to inspire the next generation of astronomers, astrophysicists, and space enthusiasts, while fostering international friendship through scientific collaboration.

The inaugural IOAA took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 2007, marking the beginning of what has become a deeply valued annual tradition. That first edition brought together students from 21 countries and culminated in the formal adoption of the IOAA Statutes by the International Board, who also elected the first leadership of the organization. From its early years, IOAA has emphasized both academic excellence and cultural exchange, giving students worldwide the chance not only to showcase their scientific abilities but also to culturally connect across borders. Over nearly two decades, IOAA has grown steadily in size, diversity, and prestige. Each host country adds its own cultural richness and scientific strengths to the experience, shaping a unique legacy each year.

Today, IOAA welcomes hundreds of participants representing more than 60 countries, reflecting the expanding global community passionate about exploring the universe. The competition continues to strengthen international cooperation in science education and remains a catalyst for inspiring young minds to reach for the stars—both literally and figuratively.

As IOAA travels to Hanoi for its 9th edition, it carries forward this spirit of discovery, friendship, and global scientific exchange that has defined the Olympiad since its inception.
